4 Unmissable Exhibitions at Malaga Art Museums

Visitors to Malaga art museums over the next few weeks are in for a treat because the city is currently hosting four excellent exhibitions. We’ve visited them all and highly recommended you take in at least one of them while you’re on holiday in Malaga.

CAC – Shepard Fairey Your Eyes Here & D*Face Wasted Youth

At the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (CAC), this exhibition is a must-see for fans of street and poster art. Put it on your sights list too if you’d like to see the miniature versions of the giant murals behind the CAC buildings.

Shepard Fairey, aka Obey, gets the lion’s share of the wall space at the CAC where some of his best art work is on display. Red, black and white dominate Obey’s work where there’s a definitive revolutionary air. Highlights include his iconic poster of Obama for the electoral campaign and an entire wall lined with dozens of his red posters.

The back galleries are dedicated to D*Face where a giant skeleton takes centre stage. This British artist paints in ‘comic book’ style in bright primary colours and his work mixes transgression and humour. We liked his irreverent take on pop art and his colourful monolith.

Museo Carmen Thyssen – Summer Days

Summer time outside moves indoors to this museum in a lovely exhibition dedicated to the first pictures of summer on canvas. Scenes of beaches, boats, summer picnics and portraits by many famous artists including Picasso, Hopper and Sorolla line the walls on the second floor and the tour continues on the first floor with a small but entertaining display of photos of beaches in Spain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries plus a collection of extraordinary swimwear. We loved it all, although my top take-home picture would be Hopper’s yacht on a deep-blue sea, the essence of summer.

Museo Picasso – Louise Bourgeois I’ve been to hell and back

An extraordinary collection of art created by an extraordinary artist and some of the pieces are on public display for the first time. Start with Bourgeois’ iconic giant spider – brilliantly showcased in the patio – and make your way through paintings, sculptures, poetry and drawings. Some of the exhibits shock and all make you think (and leave you thinking about them long afterwards).

On until 27 Sept. Daily in July and August 10am-8pm, in Sept 10am-7pm. €5.50 (€10 for Picasso Museum as well)

Pompidou Centre – Joan Miró Work on paper

One of Spain’s most famous 20th century artists features in the museum’s second temporary exhibition. In this small exhibition, the paintings and drawings showcase all of Miró’s signature icons (birds, dogs, stars, suns…) and give a unique insight into the artist’s talent. Our favourite was the blue dog.

On until 27 Sept. Until 15 Sept Weds-Sun 11am-10pm, after 15 Sept Weds-Sun 9.30am-8pm. Open until 11pm on Fri and Sat during August. €4 (€9 for whole museum – read our quick guide to the Pompidou Centre in Malaga).
