New Hotels in Malaga

Plenty of hotels in Malaga offer good-value rooms and top-notch service, but when it comes to luxury accommodation the list runs to just a few. Nor are there many to choose from if you’re looking for something a little bit different.

But along with the new art museums, gourmet markets and wifi on the buses, Malaga also has several new hotels on the horizon. Some are under refurb and almost ready to open their doors, while others are still in the pipeline. Read on to see what’s new in the world of Malaga hotels.

Room Mate mark 3

The scaffolding covering the corner of the street behind the Tourist Office has just come down and it won’t be long before it’s removed to uncover the latest edition to Room Mate’s hotels in Malaga. Room Mate Valeria, younger sister to Lola and Larios, is expected to open at the end of this year. The highlight here will undoubtedly be the rooftop terrace – the building’s height and location opposite the port means you can expect great views of Malaga.

Luxury with a capital GL

This will be Malaga’s only 5-star gran luxe hotel when it opens mid-2016 as well as a must-visit if only to admire the patio and 9,000 square metres of gardens. Designed by iconic Malaga architect Guerrero Strachan in 1927, the Gran Hotel Miramar in its near century of history has been a hotel, a blood bank, a hotel and the city’s courts of justice before returning full circle to a hotel again.

The video on the hotel’s website gives you a good idea of what gran luxe will mean – think 28 suites including 2 royal, a spa, pools, cutting-edge interior design… The location couldn’t be better either with La Caleta beach outside the front door and Muelle Uno and the Pompidou Centre within a couple of minutes’ walk.

Where: Paseo de Reding

What: 5-star gran luxe with 200 rooms including 28 suites

Why: beaches and marina almost on site and luxury with a capital GL.

Which guide to Malaga category: no doubt about this one – splurge hotels!

Let there be light

A striking modern hotel between the river and Atarazanas market has the added bonus of being designed by Rafael Moneo, one of Spain’s most acclaimed architects and the only Spaniard to win the Pritzker Prize for architecture.

This hotel in Malaga has been in and out of the pipeline because of lack of finance and political consensus. However, in October this year, the developer appeared to come with the funds and Malaga City Council announced that the go-ahead looks likely. It should bring life (and light – Moneo’s design includes a huge central patio) to this rather shoddy area when it’s completed some time between 2016 and 2017.

Where: Calle Hoyo de Esparteros

What: 4-star with 10 floors housing 138 rooms

Why: good central location and modern design.

Which guide to Malaga category: possibly 1 for the 5 best unusual hotels in Malaga.

Moneo hotel in Malaga

35 floors up

The latest addition to the list of new hotels in Malaga comes from Qatar and has a budget of €100 million. This one’s all about location – bang in the centre of Malaga quay next to the cruise terminal – and height. Stretching 135 metres upwards, this will be Malaga’s first hotel skyscraper. No designs have been revealed yet, but we’re imagining something along the lines of the futuristic towers that dot the skyline in Dubai. It’s going to be a long wait though because construction won’t start until at least the end of 2016.

Where: Malaga Port next to the cruise terminal

What: 5-star GL with 35 floors home to 350 suites

Why: sea and city views to die for and the sheer luxury

Which guide to Malaga category: splurge hotels or maybe best views?
