New restaurants in Malaga – a spa for the senses at Araboka

Araboka boasts a location in 1 of our favourite spots in the city centre, just a step from the Picasso Museum in one of the quietest areas in town. This restaurant opened very recently and it’s already difficult to get a table if you haven’t booked before hand.

The food – Araboka describes itself a ‘wine and food house’ where you can experience a ‘spa for the senses’. Chef Christian Soler cooks up traditional favourites – croquettes, Russian salad (with nice fat prawns) and Spanish omelette – as well as more sophisticated takes on meat and fish. The menu isn’t particularly long, but the weekly chef’s suggestions bolster it up nicely.

The design – a stunning interior with a striking feature walls and quotes about wine. Seating is comfy inside, but outside it’s bar stools only so not really suitable for long meals.

A nice touch – the long wine list with reasonable prices.

Expect to pay: €5 to €17 per dish

Opening times: Daily 1pm to midnight

More info: Discover Araboka on Calle Pedro de Toledo 4 (up from Calle Císter).

New restaurants in Malaga – Asia meets Brazil at Mixtúrate Gastrobar

Note that this restaurant has closed since we wrote this piece. Disappointing because it was very good!

The latest on a long list of new restaurants in Malaga Soho district, Mixtúrate offers a unique dining experience. This venue opened in September last year but it has already attracted a lot of interest among the city’s foodies.

The food – a unique combo of Asia and Brazil comes together on the menu where almost every dish comes with something you perhaps haven’t quite heard of. Expect every dish to be an explosion of taste and surprising combination of sweet and sour, salty and hot.

The design – edgy and creative in a bright space where geometric designs dominate. You can watch the chefs at work through the large window onto the kitchen.

A nice touch – the dessert tray that the waiter brings round to your table. All the desserts are served in Kilner jars.

Expect to pay: €8 to €18 per dish

Opening times: Tuesday to Thursday 1-4.30pm & 8-11pm, Friday & Saturday 1-4.30pm & 8-11.30pm, Sunday 1-4.30pm.

More info: Casas de Campo 4.

Note that this restaurant closed in mid-2017.

New restaurants in Malaga – Cooking sensations at Alexso

Alexso is slightly off the beaten track, but still counts as one of the best restaurants in Malaga city centre. This venue opened a few months ago and is rapidly gaining a faithful following.

The food – the restaurant’s slogan is “Cooking sensations” so it’s no surprise to find that dishes at this restaurant are visually stunning. Using a mixture of traditional Malaga recipes – you’ll find ajo blanco and gazpachuelo on the soup menu – and innovative twists, chef José Antonio Moyano really does create something for everyone.

The design – Alexso isn’t one of the new restaurants in Malaga that have pushed the boat out in design. Instead they’ve gone for simple elegance because after all, you’re here to concentrate on the food.

A nice touch – the children’s menu with 3 suggestions (and none of them nuggets!). It isn’t often that a formal restaurant makes concessions for families, but Alexso does.

Expect to pay: €4 to €16 per dish.

Opening times: Monday 1.30-4pm, Tuesday to Saturday 1.30-4pm & 8.30pm-midnight

More info: Find Alexso on Calle Mariblanca 40 (2 blocks west of the Cervantes Theatre.
