Introducing AMALia, your AI Malaga guide

Since its inception in September 2015, Guide to Malaga has made a name for itself by offering up-to-date information about the city. Our website updates its guides to Malaga events, whether monthly or seasonal, adding new and updated information every week. However, there’s one thing Guide to Malaga can’t do and that’s provide information in real time. That’s where AMALia, a new artificial intelligence (AI) Malaga Guide, comes in.

This innovative AI-powered travel companion gives you the information you need right now via WhatsApp. In addition, AMALia speaks your language, unlike the Guide to Malaga team who are ‘just’ fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Features of this AI Guide for Malaga

Using AI, AMALia does the following:

Provides real-time information

AMALia is online 24/7/365 and therefore has her finger on the buzzer all the time. As a result, she can provide you with real-time information.

Offers local expertise

AMALia is trained by Malaga locals who love their city and culture. This means you get authentic recommendations and often off the beaten track. (We love this aspect of the AMALia AI Malaga Guide because it mirrors what we do.)

Gives personalised recommendations

AMALia learns what your personal preferences are and tailors her recommendations to fit them. Consequently, the information is personalised to you, something we can’t do at Guide to Malaga at such an individual level.

Promotes sustainable tourism

This AI Malaga Guide highlights eco-friendly activities. It also supports local businesses, giving you the chance to reduce your carbon footprint when you’re on holiday in Malaga. We love this side to AMALia too because we believe sustainable tourism is the only way forward.

Easy to use

AMALia works through WhatsApp, something most of us have installed on our phones. You just enter her number and chat as if she’s a real contact. Ask your question and wait for an answer. There’s no need to install an app or do anything else.

Below is a screenshot of our conversation with AMALia on Thursday 1 August. As you can see, she recommended a free concert at the Ocón Auditorium, also mentioned in our What’s on in August post 😍

And you can chat with AMALia in your language. Her replies will be the language you ask the question or the default language on your phone (ours in Spanish, which is why the first message is in Spanish).

The perfect combo

Of course, the Guide to Malaga website does all of the above too except for the real-time component. And we think that together, AMALia and Guide to Malaga make perfect travel companions.

Guide to Malaga offers comprehensive information and an excellent overview of the city, its attractions, accommodation options and restaurant recommendations. We believe our event guides are second to none.

AMALia enhances what we provide by giving you the information you need right NOW. So, imagine you’re at Malaga Fair in the morning and want to know where there are children’s activities at lunchtime. Just ask AMALia and she’ll tell you.

A note on Guide to Malaga and AI

We’ve been following developments in AI closely over the last 18 months and experimented with ChatGPT and similar tools. We’ve seen their utility in SEO work and analysing website statistics, but haven’t been convinced by their research and writing skills. ChatGPT in particular has wrong information about Malaga. As a result, all the content on Guide to Malaga is human-created and will continue to be so.

However, we can see how useful AI is in tailoring preferences and offering information to match. AMALia is one of the examples of how you can harness AI to work for what you need. We think this start-up project, run by locals Noemí and Iñaki, is a great addition to Malaga tourism and believe it’ll help you get much more from the city.
