Getting the best travel medical insurance for Malaga
As we all know, anything can happen at any time. Although the unexpected is unpredictable, there are some things you can do to enjoy peace of mind and lessen the effects of the curveballs life occasionally throws us. Getting the best travel medical insurance for Malaga is one of those things, but finding the company that provides it isn’t always easy.
Our Guide to Malaga team has done the research and thinks we’ve found an excellent contender: SafetyWing Nomad Insurance. In this article, we explain why.
Where is this travel medical insurance policy valid?
SafetyWing covers over 180 countries, including Spain, making it ideal travel medical insurance for Malaga. However, you don’t need to state your destination when you contract the policy.
Can I use the same policy for multiple countries?
Yes, the policy covers you wherever you travel except for the countries listed below.
Are any countries not included?
Yes, SafetyWing doesn’t provide cover in countries subject to EU, UK, UN or US sanctions. In late 2024, those countries were Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria and the Ukraine.
The policy also doesn’t cover your home country except when you return there after 90 or more days abroad. In this case, you get 30 days cover (15 days for US residents).
What does SafetyWing Nomad Insurance cover?
The policy covers four pillars: travel, health, repatriation and evacuation.
Travel cover – your policy includes compensation of up to US$100 a day if you’re delayed by more than 12 hours (maximum 2 days), up to US$5,000 if your trip is interrupted and up to US$3,000 for lost checked-in luggage.
Health cover – emergency medical treatment cover is up to US$250,000, with up to US$100,000 for emergency evacuation. In addition, there’s up to US$1,000 for emergency dental care.
Repatriation of remains cover – up to US$20,000.
Evacuation cover – up to US$10,000 in the advent of political evacuation.
We think this cover is one of the most comprehensive on the market for travel medical insurance for Malaga.
What doesn’t it cover?
As with all insurance policies, Nomad Insurance doesn’t cover you to the hilt. However, the list of exclusions is short (and not in small print size!):
Trip cancellation – the SafetyWing Nomad Insurance policy doesn’t include it.
Pre-existing health conditions – if you already suffer from a health condition when you take out the policy, it isn’t covered. However, if you have a serious episode of the condition when travelling with the policy, treatment is covered.
Adventure sports – extreme sports activities aren’t included in the policy. However, you can purchase this cover as an extra (not available for US residents).
Expensive electronic equipment – if you have a high-end laptop or camera, you should purchase this cover as an extra to ensure you’re protected.
Travellers over 69 – unfortunately, 69 is the maximum age to take out this policy.
How long is this travel medical insurance valid for?
As long as you need it for. The minimum cover is 5 days and the maximum is 365 days. You have two options when you take out the policy:
Pay-as-you-go – this option works like a subscription service. You pay for the first 28 days; after that, the policy automatically renews for another 28 days until you choose to terminate the subscription.
Good for digital nomads or anyone who doesn’t have fixed travel dates
Pay-upfront – you set the dates for your policy and pay for cover during that fixed period.
Good for travellers whose holiday has a start and end date.
Do I have to buy the policy in my home country?
No, you can buy a SafetyWing Nomad Insurance policy when you arrive in Malaga, ideal if you forget to take out insurance before you leave or fancy staying longer than the validity of a previous policy.
How much does this travel medical insurance for Malaga cost?
SafetyWing’s prices were one of the features we liked most at Guide to Malaga, and we think it’s a very affordable policy. To give you an idea, costs for non-US travel are:
- Travellers aged 18 to 39 – US$36,96 a month
- Travellers aged 40 to 49 – US$59.92 a month
- Travellers aged 50 to 59 – US$94.08 a month
- Travellers aged 60 to 69 – US$127.68 a month.
If you plan to travel to the US, policy prices are higher because healthcare costs more.
What about cover for families?
SafetyWing includes 1 child under 10 in every adult policy free of charge, making it a great option for digital nomad families.
Why is Guide to Malaga a SafetyWing partner?
Guide to Malaga is a SafetyWing affiliate because we know how important the right cover is when you travel abroad. We always take out travel medical insurance and although we (fortunately) haven’t had to use it often, we’ve always felt safe knowing we had it.
We like the flexibility of SafetyWing Nomad Insurance – we don’t know of any other insurance policies that work like a subscription. We also think it’s ideal if you’re visiting Malaga as a digital nomad or want to stay in the city for an indefinite period of time. In addition, the 30-day cover in your home country after you return could be a game changer.
Note that we receive a small commission if you purchase a SafetyWing Nomad Insurance policy. This has no extra cost for you and helps us. Thank you!
