Málaga Museum Secrets: Free Sundays, Open Mondays and a Hidden Gem

Updated 24 September 2026. Málaga has a museum for almost every curiosity, but opening days and free hours can catch visitors out. If your trip falls on a Monday or Sunday, start here. Then go beyond the familiar galleries for a remarkable Baroque sanctuary that many visitors walk straight past.

Málaga museums at a glance

Open on Monday: Museo Picasso Málaga, Centre Pompidou Málaga, Museo Casa Natal Picasso and Museo del Automóvil y la Moda. Open on Sunday: all four, plus Museo Carmen Thyssen, Museo de Málaga and the Russian Museum Collection. Hours and exceptions are below; always confirm your date with the linked venue.

The best-known museums, with the hours that matter

Museo Picasso Málaga: the obvious choice with a quiet secret

In the Palacio de Buenavista, Picasso’s work is the draw, but make time for the building and its garden too. Monday and Sunday: open daily, 10am–7pm in September–October and March–June, 10am–8pm in July–August, and 10am–6pm in November–February. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Free: the final two hours of every Sunday (5–7pm in September–October, 4–6pm in winter, 6–8pm in summer). The museum closes on 25 December, 1 and 6 January. Check the official visit page and our in-depth Picasso guide.

Centre Pompidou Málaga: contemporary art by the sea

The colourful cube at Muelle Uno is worth seeing even before you enter. Monday and Sunday: 9.30am–8pm; the regular closure is Tuesday. Free: Sunday from 4pm. Check the official timetable and our Pompidou guide for the current exhibitions.

Museo Casa Natal Picasso: a different side of Picasso

Picasso’s birthplace on Plaza de la Merced tells a more intimate story than the main museum. Monday and Sunday: 9.30am–8pm every day, including most holidays; final admission 15 minutes before closing. Free: Sunday 4–8pm. Closed 1 January and 25 December; shorter hours on 24 and 31 December. The house and the temporary exhibition space have separate or combined tickets. See official hours and tickets.

Museo del Automóvil y la Moda: cars, couture and a former factory

At Tabacalera, classic cars share a former tobacco factory with fashion and design. It is a good choice if your travelling companions have different tastes. Monday and Sunday: daily 10am–2.30pm and 4–7pm; the ticket desk closes 30 minutes earlier. Free: no general free Sunday admission is listed; some visitor categories qualify. Closed 25 December and 1 January. Check the city’s current listing. Allow extra travel time from the old town.

Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga: art and an archaeological surprise

Andalusian painting fills a historic palace. The museum also offers access to the Roman remains found beneath it, on a ticket that includes the archaeological site. Monday: normally closed, but the museum lists exceptional openings, including 12 October 2026 (free) and 7 December 2026. Sunday: 10am–8pm. Free: Sunday from 4pm. Check official hours, exceptions and ticket options.

Museo de Málaga: two collections in one palace

The Palacio de la Aduana, pictured above, houses archaeology and fine art. Monday: closed, except certain Mondays immediately before a public holiday. Sunday: 9am–3pm; Tuesday–Saturday 9am–9pm. Free: admission is free for accredited EU citizens; other visitors should check the current tariff. Its Sunday closing time is earlier than that of most museums here. See the Junta de Andalucía listing and our museum guide.

Russian Museum Collection: free on Sunday afternoon, not all week

At Tabacalera, the exhibition programme can change, so look at what is actually on before making the trip. Monday: normally closed, except special openings. Sunday: 9.30am–8pm. Free: Sunday from 4pm for everyone; the official tariff lists €4 for a temporary exhibition at other times, with exemptions for eligible visitors. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Check the city hours and published tariff.

Which museums are free on Sunday in Málaga?

For a low-cost afternoon, begin at the Museo de Málaga before it shuts at 3pm if you qualify for free admission as an EU citizen. From 4pm, the Pompidou, Picasso’s Birthplace, Carmen Thyssen and the Russian Museum Collection advertise general free access. The Museo Picasso opens free for its final two hours, which start at a different time by season. Free hours can be busy and special exhibitions may have different conditions. Follow each official link above before you travel.

Hidden gem: the Sanctuary of La Victoria

A short walk beyond Plaza de la Merced leads to the Basílica de Santa María de la Victoria, linked to Málaga’s patron saint. The surprise is its richly decorated torre camarín; the museum complex also includes a dramatic crypt. This is a living place of worship, so the church and the museum spaces should not be treated as the same visit. The city lists the church as open 8.30am–2pm and 6–8.30pm daily, except Monday mornings. The tower visit is listed Tuesday–Friday, 10.30am–2pm; it is therefore not a reliable Monday or Sunday museum stop. Ask about access to the crypt when arranging a visit, rather than assuming it comes with entry to the church. See the official tourism listing.

Another money-saving secret: Málaga Pass

Málaga Pass

The city’s Málaga Pass page describes a paid card for one-time entry to participating museums and attractions, plus some discounts. It is useful to compare if you plan several paid visits in a short period. Check the current included venues, price and availability before purchasing: a pass may offer less value if your itinerary falls on free Sunday hours. There is also a separate three-museum combined ticket for Casa Natal, Pompidou and the Russian Museum Collection.

Planning a Monday or Sunday route

Monday: combine the Picasso Museum, Picasso’s Birthplace and the Pompidou on foot, then take a separate trip to Tabacalera for the Automobile and Fashion Museum. Sunday: visit the Museo de Málaga in the morning, then choose one or two free-afternoon museums rather than rushing through them all. For a broader choice on the other days, use our complete Málaga museums guide.
