MIDI by El Lago

If you’re looking for a perfect place to enjoy a delicious lunch at wallet-friendly prices in a beautiful setting, head for MIDI by El Lago near Marbella. Headed by chef Fernando Villasclaras, El Lago has Michelin star status, so expect seriously fine dining at lunchtime too.

The emphasis is on ‘fun’ food as Fernando introduces different takes on traditional, everyday dishes. For instance, his patatas bravas are light puff pastry potatoes with a spicy sauce; the cannelloni case is avocado rather than pasta; and the classic lomo de orza (marinated pork) comes in a cute mollete bun and a delicious chutney.

The menu includes the following, all with prices ranging from €5 to €35:

Red tuna tartare
  • A choice of snacks – the Club Sandwich and Caesar Salad star here.
  • Tapas and sharing plates – don’t miss the puff pastry potatoes with spicy sauce, a lip-smacking take on patatas bravas (showcased in the hero image), the squid and king prawn croquettes, avocado cannelloni (we have no idea how the chef manages to get the avocado that thin)…
  • Heartier lunch dishes – sea bream and steaks take centre stage in this section.
  • Desserts – including the house creme caramel.

If you fancy a glass of wine with your lunch, MIDI has over 300 labels on the wine list, so plenty to choose from. Ask the Maître d’ for pairing suggestions.
